Precor AMT100i Experience Series Adaptive Motion Trainer Review

Being one of the highest consumer-rated elliptical trainer, the Precor AMT100i Experience Series Adaptive Motion Trainer provides a unique exercise experience with its variable stride that automatically adjusts its motion to suit you. This feature alone puts this well above other elliptical machines which many users find very restrictive.

With the adaptive motion, you can instantly move from deep lunges similar to climbing the stairs, to short strides that equates to walking, to mid-range strides similar to jogging, and then to long strides like mow-impact running.

This fitness equipment is more on the high-end with its high price tag, but it is well worth it with its unique features.

Key Features:

  • Adaptive motion – This patented feature defines the AMT (Adaptive Motion Trainer) line. The Precor 100i allows you to move at your required speed, and at any point of time when you want to increase your overall exercise speed, the machine adapts accordingly.
  • State of the art stride dial – gives you an idea about how the different muscles of your body react to your current workout which is helpful in finding ways to make your exercise more effective to those muscle areas.
  • Coordinated arm and leg movement with its upper body moving handlebars – This provides a total body workout.
  • Variable stride length – the machine automatically adjusts your stride length without the need to change the settings. This is great if you want to switch longer to shorter strides, and vice versa. Additionally, people with different heights can use the same equipment without any problem, unlike other elliptical machines which tend to work well only for people within a certain height range.
  • SmartRate – real-time feedback on your heart rate and calories burned.
  • Adjustable resistance levels – you can adjust the resistance level from 1 up to 20, depending on your needs.

Common User Issues/Concerns

While the Precor 100i Adaptive Motion Trainer has generally positive reviews from users, there are some people who find the AMT and Stride Dial feature to be quite distracting. The fact that this machine will get you involved in your workout tend to put a few people off who just wants to get the exercise done, without having to think about it too much. If this sort of thing also bothers you, then you might be better off with using a typical elliptical machine who does most of the work for you and you just keep doing the same repetitive motion to achieve your workout.

Also, first time users may also “bounce” when they try the Precor 100i AMT. This is because the machine has both vertical and horizontal component to it. It’s just a matter of “getting used to it”, as one user puts out. It may be hard at first trying to get used to the machine, but once you find the kind of stride and workout pattern you’re comfortable with, then it’s all a breeze.

Some people may not like the idea of too much freedom in terms of what you can do with a single machine. But this helps you get a more intense, more personalized workout that you wouldn’t normally get in one piece of fitness equipment.

User Reviews:

“I am now on rehab for a torn hamstring tendon, and the adaptibility of the this machine is amazing. A traditional elliptical machine hurt the point of injury, but with the AMT I can alter this machine so it doesn’t hit the point of injury (where my hamstring attaches to the hip) and still maintain my cardiovascular fitness. I think it’s an amazing invention!”

“There is no comparison to the workout one can get from an AMT vs an elliptical. On an elliptical, the machine does most of the work for you, you just need to just get the thing going and then the inertia of the machine mostly keeps it going, which is evident once you step off an elliptical, it will keep going all by itself for several gyrations.

Personally, i have never felt much of a all around body workout with an elliptical nor have I ever felt out of breath.

With an amt, your whole body is in play, working and you’ll definitely get winded if you want to. I’m not knocking ellipticals, just underlining the fact that, for a strenuous workout, an elliptical is not your best option. The amt will kick your butt…it ROCKS!”
